“I’ll Let You Know When I’m Done”

Transitioning in Los Angeles

A Photography Project

Jack Bohlka

What is this?

A photography project which will exclusively feature transgender folks who are on the journey of feeling at home in their own bodies. This is a life-affirming experience.

This will be a celebration of the courage trans folks have to fully become who they are meant to be. Folks in all phases of transition will be photographed. I will try to answer the question, “Does a person ever stop transitioning?” “How do you know when you are done?” Most importantly, this is a collaborative project between the folks featured in the photographs and myself. Photographs will be negotiated and made together. I do not have a preconceived idea of how the photos will look.

Where will the photographs be made?

At a place where each individual feels best represents their journey. For example, it could be at home, or some other favorite place.  Any props that help tell the story will be most welcome, but not necessary.

What do you hope to accomplish with this project?

To celebrate with folks who are transitioning. This is more than photography; it is designed to lift up and celebrate  uniqueness and beauty.

Why are you doing this?

In 2016, my trans daughter and I began working on advocacy and visibility projects with the trans community. She, as a member of the community, and me as an ally. I am a professional photographer. She was an artist, poet, and photographer. In December 2016, she was killed in the Ghostship fire in Oakland.  Although she is no longer here, I realized that the work we had begun must continue.

I firmly believe in the power of photography to transform, heal,  celebrate and give expression to feelings  in a way that words cannot.

How will the photographs be used?

They will be available for public viewing, but the exact form has not been determined. Possibilities include art exhibitions, a book, and internet publication.

Do you expect to make money from this project?

Not for me personally. Any proceeds after expenses will be donated to helping more folks transition. Making money is not the point of this project; telling individual stories is the point.

How will you select people to photograph?

Through personal invitation, word of mouth, and recommendations from people in the community.

Are you looking for a particular “type” of person?

No. In fact, I hope to photograph a great diversity of folks. Again, to celebrate the human spirit without regard to race, creed, job title, or social status. The only requirement is folks who have started along the road of transition.

Update 10-5-17

We are getting many inquiries! Yay! As you consider participating in this project, please think how these photos can be used in your life. If a picture is worth 1000 words, what would you like to say to people who see your photos? Our photo session will be much, much stronger by us putting our thoughts and ideas together to create beautiful, meaningful photos!

Update 2-15-18

We’ve started photo sessions! Here are a couple of photos from a recent session. Do you like playful and light? Or more concentrated and intense? Or something else? YOU decide.  Also, you decide the location you want for your photos – a place that is special to you, or a place that is part of your story!

Update 5-6-18

I

In Her Own Words . . .

Read why Alexis Sanchez, Vice-Chair of the West Hollywood Transgender Advisory Board, decided to participate in TransProjectLA:

Official portraits?? Maybe!! So these are fro my shoot with @transprojectla which seeks to increase trans visibility and normalize trans identities. I chose a shoot at one of my Advisory Board meetings because I wanted to show the next generation of baby trans kids that trans people can be a vital part of government. I wanted to show that if you transition there are opportunities thanks to the trailblazers who came before me and my brilliant colleagues and peers who work to ensure opportunities and rights for the next generation.

Update 5-25-18

Meet Dani!

Dani is the amazing drummer for the band, Sister Mantos

We caught up with them when they played a show at MOCA Geffen. Besides being very talented musically, Dani is involved in their community and is also politically very active. It was such a pleasure to see Dani and the band, and to get some great photographs!
